Middle School Band
Band [grades 5] Elective: Semester 1, 2
Fifth grade band is a performance based year-long class that teaches students the beginnings of how to play an instrument and lays the foundation for future years in band. The basics of proper posture, breathing, intonation, tone quality, and expression are all introduced and reinforced throughout the year. Students will learn good rehearsal procedures including rehearsal conduct, following the conductor, courtesy, and being prepared for rehearsals. In addition, they will study musical concepts and values including ensemble playing, steady beat, playing in tune, accurate articulation and note reading, and expressive musical phrasing. Students work throughout the year on a variety of music, exposing them to different genres, styles, and cultures. Basic music theory and music history are also emphasized throughout the year. Students will perform in two concerts: The Christmas Program and the Spring Program
Band [grades 6, 7, 8] Elective: Semester 1, 2
Band students will learn and develop the technical skills necessary to play a musical instrument as a soloist and as a member of an ensemble and will learn to interpret music independently. Band students will learn and develop the organizational skills that will contribute to their success in band, their other classes, and the workplace. Band students will learn and develop the skills to be an effective leader and the character to be a productive member of the organization and of society. Students will perform in two concerts: The Christmas Program and the Spring Program.
